Biology
*A tuition payment will also be required for the second semester of this class.
Description: A college-prep biology course that provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general biology. Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary of biology, it provides the students with a strong background in the scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, microscopy, biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, evolution, a complete survey of three of the five kingdoms in Creation, and ecosystems. Students will be expected to be well-prepared for class each week and to be actively engaged in the learning process. This class is a minds-on classroom where Biology students will analyze, find answers, work with science vocabulary, locate information, debate, complete labs and dissections, discuss, model concepts, write-to-learn, partner with other students, and communicate findings to each other.

In order to understand this text, the student needs to have completed Algebra I and should have access to a scientific calculator. The course covers significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, stoichiometry, thermodynamics, thermochemistry, kinetics, acids and bases, redox reactions, solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, the gas laws, equilibrium and organic chemistry. Students who take and understand this course will be very well prepared for a tough university chemistry course. Hopefully, they will also gain an appreciation for chemistry around them in their every day lives.
Tutor: Laura Glassel
Length: Full-year
Level: 10th - 12th grade
Prerequisite: Completed Algebra I
Homework: Reading, questions & reviewing concepts --approximately 4 hours per week
Text Requirement: (To be purchased by parents)-- Exploring Creation with Chemistry, third edition textbook only. (Text MUST be 3rd edition) by Apologia. 1-888-524-4724.

General Science
*A tuition payment will also be required for the second semester of this class.
Description: This course is designed to be a student’s first systematic introduction to the sciences. There are three main sections: historical foundations of science, earth science, and aspects of life science. The first semester topics include the history of science, the scientific method and experimental procedures, archaeology, astronomy, geology, and paleontology. The second semester topics include meteorology, oceanography and marine life, basic aspects of chemistry and physics, and biology. The text is written in a conversational style, with apologetics and recognition of God's handiwork. Class time includes lecture and discussion emphasizing the main points from each chapter, labs, video clips, and fun activities to reinforce the concepts. Some skills we will work on throughout the year include learning how to write a lab report, take notes in class, organize information, and use study time effectively. Students are expected to complete chapter reading, On Your Own and study guide questions, and lab reports at home. The jump from elementary school to junior high can be steep in many areas, and this class will be challenging for some. However, the study skills students will learn are essential for high school and beyond.
Tutor: Judi Davidson
Length: Full-year
Level: 7th – 9th grade
Prerequisite: None
Homework: Reading, lab reports, questions, --approximately 3 - 5 hours per week
