Fine Arts

Foundational Drawing

Description: Drawing truly is the foundation of all art, which makes it such a great place to start. This course will help students discover the foundational skills of drawing that can give them the confidence to explore other art forms, create their own art and/or build on these foundational skills by deepening them with further skills in the future.

In this course, students will learn the basic elements of drawing like line, shape, value, perspective and texture. We will also be digging into the basic principles of design such as balance, contrast, proportion, pattern/rhythm, emphasis and flow. As we dive into these topics, we will be exploring examples of well-known artists and styles as they apply. As a class, we will be exploring different techniques such as pencil handling, various paper surfaces, different graphite pencils, blenders and other drawing tools. The students will learn how to use these materials and practice using each of them to achieve their desired goal. Students will layer the skills learned through various unique drawing exercises that will allow for opportunities of creative growth, exploration and expression. We will also be holding discussions to practice how to critique honestly and kindly, how to encourage and support each other in their own individual processes of creating. We often are our own worst critic, so learning how to quiet that voice, step out in courage and grow in self confidence is a huge passion of mine in what I teach. Oftentimes, we need the help, encouragement and perspectives of caring people around us to do that.

Pablo Picasso said that “art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” My belief is that art should not be stressful. It should be fun and filled with a lot of exploration. It should be a way to wash away the dust of everyday life from our souls. I believe it can be an incredible opportunity to connect with the best Creator there is - the One who created us. Just like when we explore places in life, we find places we love and places we don’t. We find beauty and mess. We discover what works well and what doesn’t work at all. We practice. We gain knowledge, wisdom and information that helps us shape our thoughts and feelings. We gain experiences and memories. I seek to structure my classes in such a way that exploration is one of the most foundational experiences. I want my students to learn about themselves, to connect with one another and find tools that work for them to express themselves while also learning the foundational elements and design of drawing that will help them continue to grow in their ability to create art and express themselves.

Classical Drawing 1

Description: Drawing is the foundation of all art. Just as the athlete must practice his or her sport, the artist must learn drawing skills and practice regularly in order to create beautiful works of art in any medium. This course will plunge the student into classic traditional drawing methods in the style of the Old Masters (Leonardo DaVinci, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Vermeer). Students will learn to accurately see and draw an object by observing light and shadow on the form, discerning shapes, and by making comparative size and relational observations. This is achieved by drawing directly from life (as opposed to "copying" from a photo or magazine). We will learn a variety of drawing techniques including pencil handling, shading, line, contour, creating texture, and other special effects. 1 and 2-point perspective will be introduced. There will be hands-on projects created on traditional paper, and also on a variety of other surfaces, and we will explore the many grades of graphite (pencils) and other drawing tools available, and how to properly use each one to achieve the desired results. There will be exercises in negative space, contour and blind contour drawing. We will also touch on the lives and works of some famous artists as they are appropriate to the lesson or technique. Honest critique, and much encouragement and support will be forthcoming in this class.
My Philosophy:  I believe art should be FUN. I emphasize that in all of my art classes (adults, teens, and children.) There should be no stress in creating. Art is a personal expression which comes from within and I want to encourage all students to express freely without fear of failure. The training I offer is based on my personal fine art education and years of experience. I'm fortunate to have been artistically encouraged since I was a very small child, and I wish for my students to experience the same support and encouragement.

Classical Drawing 2

Class Description: A wider variety of drawing mediums and surfaces will be introduced and explored, including charcoal, conté, and colored pencil. Students will experience advanced methods of drawing and creating the illusion of form on a 2-dimensional surface, working in stages from black and white drawings to full color renderings. The timeless works of the Old Masters (Leonardo DaVinci, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Vermeer and others) will be presented and discussed as relevant to the lessons. Seeing accurate shapes, shading, contour, light, and form will be emphasized, as well a study of color theory. Color application, including seeing color accurately, choosing appropriate colors, and layering and blending will be included in this advanced drawing course.
My Philosophy:  I believe art should be FUN. I emphasize that in all of my art classes. There should be no stress in creating. Art is a personal expression which comes from within and I want to encourage all students to express freely without fear of failure. The training I offer is based on my personal fine art education and years of experience.
