Description: The first and foremost goal of language teaching is to bring a person unable to communicate in ASL to a basic level of communicative competency. The curriculum and the lessons are designed to help the class and the program meet the five areas of Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. Units 1-6 comprise several kinds of lessons: Conversational (functional), Skill Building, Deaf Cultural Experiences, and Review. Conversation (function) lessons introduce vocabulary and ASL gloss structures. Skill lessons focus on introducing numbers, vocabulary, fingerspelling, spatial elements, classifiers, and other supporting skills. Cultural lessons focus on behaviors that enable students to act in linguistically and socially acceptable ways. Unit 3 and 6 focuses on building narrative skills to prepare students to tell a story about their family and childhood.

Units 7-12 comprise several kinds of lessons: functional (conversational or narrative), skill building, comprehension, cultural, and review. The functional lessons introduce vocabulary, and ASL gloss structures, or narratives. Skill building lessons focus on practicing detailed language features that support student’s general ASL production, such as various number types, classifiers, fingerspelling practice, space and semantic use of agreement or spatial verbs, and the use of negation signs. The comprehension lessons use stories to expand students’ skill to process and figure meanings from large chunks of signed information. The culture lessons focus on history, behaviors and knowledge that enable students to act in appropriate linguistic and social ways, and to gain more cultural insight of the Deaf community. Unit 12 will include signed storytelling via video. (Note: Because of the critical foundations learned first semester, new students will not be able to join the class second semester.)

Description: With Signing Naturally Level 3 curriculum, sign language students gain the cultural awareness and signing skills needed to interact effectively in the Deaf community. Several units focus on building narrative skills, moving from an informal to a more formal presentation. Other units focus on developing language skills used in everyday life, and the skills needed to explain ideas or concepts. The lessons will also include vocabulary, classifiers, video, newspaper stories, and various storytelling techniques, discuss various topics on Deaf culture, more in depth ASL gloss structures, and research papers on various life experiences. Students are required to bring their workbook to class weekly. (Note: Because of the critical foundations learned first semester, new students will not be able to join the class second semester.)
