The Skills of Listening and Speaking More Clearly and Effectively
First Semester
Description: Following Aristotle's three types of Rhetoric,* students will learn and practice communicating more intentionally and effectively, while sharpening their interpersonal skills of listening, empathy, assertiveness, and boundaries. Students will discover their unique personalities and strengths, and will explore their role as God's image-bearers for the purpose of being authentic, logical, and passionate young adults in today's world.

Debate
Description: This one semester course is designed to teach the foundations of comparing and contrasting ideas using the platform of debate theory. Everything you would like your student to learn in the area of communication will be put into practice with this activity. Not only will communication skills and confidence be refined, but thinking and reasoning awakened. We will be using the formal team cross-examination debate style, learning to debate on both sides of a specified resolution. Besides learning the theory of debate and its terminology, there will be vigorous classroom practice.

Public Speaking for Jr. & Sr. High School
Second Semester
Description: What is feared more than death itself? Public speaking! It turns out, that only 19% of Americans are afraid of dying, while 25.9% are afraid of public speaking. Can you do anything to reduce your student’s fear of public speaking? Yes, you can, by providing clear instruction and opportunities for practice. Using IEW's material for Public Speaking, this class will include a thorough concentration on public speaking with an emphasis on content and delivery. Its objectives include expanding speaking and listening skills, increasing poise and confidence, enhancing thinking and critical analysis, and developing the organization of various speech outlines into polished finished products. Class periods will include both impromptu and prepared speaking along with discussion of speaking skills, fun speaking exercises, and both informative and persuasive speaking styles. All students are welcome. If desired, this class provides excellent preparation for the PSEO Public Speaking course that can be taken in 11th or 12th grades.
