Math Study Groups
Plan to Succeed in Math!
Plan to Succeed in Math!
Description: This class is designed to increase students’ success in their current math course. Students will be grouped by class level and will be taught the valuable skill of working in groups, an essential skill for the lab and discussion components of college courses. During this class, students will work on their math homework or other problems from their SHCC math course, and receive help from an experienced math teacher. Math Study Groups are ideal for the student who would benefit from hearing the math concepts explained again or from another angle, and benefit from seeing additional examples of their math homework. This class is an option for parents who wish to hire a math tutor for weekly homework help.
Tutor: Jim Wentzlaff
Length: One Semester
Level: 7th – 12th
Prerequisite: For students studying math independently at home or enrolled in a SHCC math classes.
Homework: None
Text: None
Students should bring: math textbook, math notebook with class notes, and a mechanical pencil.
Class Tuition: See the registration form for current prices. Tuition will cover the cost of supplies.

Math Study Group Rationale
The challenge in offering upper-level math courses is that the SHCC program is set up to offer once-a-week instruction, which typically is not enough for high school math. In order to accommodate this limited tutor input for the math courses, we have implemented the following helps:·
Studies show that students in cooperative learning math groups—even gifted students placed in heterogeneous groups—had significantly higher achievement than their peers in traditional programs.
The challenge in offering upper-level math courses is that the SHCC program is set up to offer once-a-week instruction, which typically is not enough for high school math. In order to accommodate this limited tutor input for the math courses, we have implemented the following helps:·
- Students have step-by-step solutions available in case they need assistance on their homework during the week. ·
- For pre-algebra and above, students have the option to purchase a period of a Math Study Group on Thursdays.
- This study period is exclusively for math and is supervised by an experienced math teacher whose purpose is to answer individual questions and direct group problem solving.
- This enables students to make sure they have figured out the concepts from the previous week’s teaching time prior to showing up for the next class period.
- The timing of having the Math Study Group prior to the next math class enables students to ask questions about any problems they could not solve independently-- without the help of the solutions manual.
Studies show that students in cooperative learning math groups—even gifted students placed in heterogeneous groups—had significantly higher achievement than their peers in traditional programs.

Math Mastery
for Confidence & Competence In Preparation for Algebra and Geometry
*A tuition payment will also be required for the second semester of this class.
Description: This class lays the foundation for success in the higher level math courses. Half of each class will be spent with Dr. Henry Borenson's "Hands On Equations" system, which is a manipulative-based introduction to algebraic concepts. The rest of the class will work on mastery, speed, and mental calculations of the following concepts: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division (going beyond the "nines" and doing it faster). We will use the book “Mastering Essential Math Skills” to work with fractions, decimals, and percents (reviewing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of these plus learn conversion between the three types). We will look at middle-level geometry, calculations with negative numbers, and key words for solving word problems.
Tutor: Kim Wentzlaff
Length: Full Year Course
Level: 7th – 10th
Prerequisite: None
Homework: approximately 60 minutes per week.
Text: (To be purchased by parents): Mastering Essential Math Skills, Book 2, by Richard W. Fisher (2007) ISBN 0966621123. Available on Amazon.com.
Students should bring: 3-ring (1-inch) binder with paper and a mechanical pencil.
Class Tuition: See the registration form for current prices. Tuition will cover the cost of supplies
